Student Statesmanship Institute June 24-29th, July 8-13th, and July 22-27th.

From SSI Facebook pageStudent Statesmanship Institute is preparing teenagers to live out and defend their faith in high school, college and in the marketplace of ideas! The Institute has three 5 day sessions, where there are different tracks for students to take: Legislative, Business, Media, Campaign, and Judicial. Taken from SSI's Web pageStudents learn to role play in these fields, with public speaking and competitions. I have not attended SSI, but have attended the American Legion’s Boys State, and Albion College‘s Operation Bentley. Both of them were fine leadership training programs for gifted students, and it sounds like SSI is of the same caliber, but with Christian biblical teachings. I do not know the Institute’s political leanings other than their mission statement and their sponsoring organizations. If you are, or have a Christian High School student, you should look into this.  If anyone has had experience with SSI, please contact me as I would like to hear people’s experiences with them.

Initial Questions

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kVQx2X70lTo/Rm1zMR4EZ6I/AAAAAAAABWs/gUvFDdEUHCI/s400/doggyjail_Gare_And_Kitty.jpg     The Muskegon County Commission voted a new jail as the top priority for 2012.  Current plans are to increase the jail size by 140-200 beds, as well as having a new facility.  I will first be reviewing the necessity of having a larger jail.  Only after determining whether a larger facility is needed or not, will we discuss whether to remodel or build a new facility.

Muskegon County currently holds 36 straddle or diverted prisoners from the State.  These are prisoners whose sentence is greater than 5 months but less than 23 months.  The state is suppose to pay Muskegon County $43.50 every day that they are in the Muskegon County Jail.  The Muskegon County Jail calculates that it costs them about $40.00 a day to house them, so it brings into Muskegon County $3.50 a day per prisoner. ($1277.50 a year.) BUT, the county is only paid for 17 of the 36, as they are considered violent prisoners.  The other 19 prisoners are NOT paid by the state.

Prisoners are required to paid every day that they are sentenced and in jail.  The cost is $10 a day, if they pay within 10 days of being released.  If they can not pay within 10 days, the price goes up to $18 a day.  If they fail on the payment plans and are turned over to collections, they are charged $32 dollars every day that they were in jail.

It is believed that it costs $12 a day to be on a tether.  I need to confirm whether it is only $12, or an additional $12 a day.
